AI & Computer Vision in Retail

Our Founder, Courtney Kos, joined host Kyle James on AI Chronicles to talk about how Prévoir is transforming fashion merchandising through artificial intelligence and computer vision.

Prévoir wasn’t set out to become an AI company. It was built around an idea Courtney developed 6 years ago in grad school, where she learned that even major fashion houses like Chanel or Louis Vuitton still depend on spreadsheets to analyze sales and forecast trends.

Courtney’s research helped her determine that, “there's a lot of inventory planning tools out there, but they're not fashion specific. They tend to wrap up retail as a whole. And so there's no real solution out there that's very fashion focused.”

When cultural discussion around AI started to happen, Courtney dove-deep into computer vision, and how it could be applied to these manual sales & trend analysis processes, resulting in the creation of Prévoir; a perfectly aligned solution to the problems identified in her grad school use case all those years before.

Prévoir connects directly to Shopify and extracts product attributes such as color, fabric, or cut. It combines this visual data with sales metrics to reveal which styles and details perform best. The result is a visual, data-rich dashboard that helps merchandisers make faster, smarter decisions, and at a lower cost.

The speed of LLM improvements is what makes Prévoir a viable business for the fashion industry, one that’s traditionally a laggard when it comes to adopting new technology. Courtney notes that, “computer vision has gotten so much better even in the last year…something we thought would take six months and a whole bunch of training data can now be done within a few days.”

What has intentionally taken longer, is the interface the data feeds into. Courtney’s fashion industry experience taught her that for any new technology to be successful, specifically within fashion, UX is vitally important; it has to be extremely user friendly. Because of this, the team has spent 9 months on just the user interface…but it was worth it. According to Courtney, “when we do a demo for a brand, they're really, really impressed because it's just a very natural thing that they're already doing. And now they have an assistant to help them do that.”

Prévoir’s current features include Shopify Integration; Computer Vision & Smart Tagging; Performance Insights; and Visual Comparison Tools, and will soon be rolling out Automated Range Bidding; Predict & Demand Markdown; and AI Report Generation
